Horses Mutual Grooming

Caring for horses isn´t always easy. The Horse nature is so different to human nature that it is very easy to make mistakes.

Making your horse happy is imortant. At least it is to me!

If my horse is happy I know that I am doing things right. And in the end content horses are healthy horses!

And only a content horse will give you optimum performance.

I always think having horses is like doing a jigsaw puzzle. You have to put a lot of different pieces together to get the perfect picture.

As a horse owner you have to have a very broad knowledge base: health care , hoof care , horse training , horse nutrition , ....

Only if you understand the nature of horses you can give them what they need to be happy. And you are never finished learning!

10 Important Factors For A Happy Horse

  • Horses need plenty of space to move around. Plenty of turn out and exercise will keep your horse fit and content.

  • Eating makes your horse happy. It releases endorphins into the bloodstream.

  • Horses are nosy. If they are isolated in a dark stable without contact to other horses they get stressed and depressed. They like to discover new things and interact with their colleagues.

  • Regular dental care will prevent tooth decay, sharp hooks and gingivitis. Teeth problems can cause other diseases like colic or pain when chewing food.

  • Proper hoof care will keep their feet in balance and allow for pain free locomotion.

  • Horses that like to play with their friends are happy and content.

  • Social contacts are vital for the horses well being.

  • Have saddlefit checked at least once a year. The shape of a horse changes with age and training level. A saddle that doesn´t fit causes pain, muscle hardening and atrophied muscles.

  • Mutual grooming with a good friend makes horses content.

  • Balanced Nutrition : Horses are made to eat day and night. Plenty of roughage is vital to keep horses content and healthy. The use of small mesh haynets will help to keep horses busy and increase feeding times.
